What would make a cake bake all around the cake but one little piece of it?

If your cake is not done in the middle it needs a few more minutes. If it is not done on the sides, this could be due to uneven temperatures in your oven. Have someone check the temperature to make certain it reads what you set the dial at.
Could this also be a problem of the oven not being clean? I heard this and wondered if it was true. Thanks.
