Can I cook my side dishes while cooking the turkey? Will the addition of the other pans/food take away from the heat that is needed to cook the turkey?
Yes you can. A ‘full’ oven will reduce the overall circulation in the oven and therefore will mean that individual items will take longer to cook. So, increase your cook times for your dishes. By how much? Well, that will depend on just how full your oven is and also by the number and nature of your sides dishes. For example, something dense like sweet potatoes will be impacted more, and take relatively longer than say green beans. Since you will be placing your side dishes in your oven toward the end of your turkey’s cooking process, here’s a tip.
If your oven is smallish and your turkey is big, then your turkey will have to go on the rack that is second from bottom, giving you one small rack below and one above. Roasted vegetables in baking sheets or a pyrex casserole will fit here. If the turkey is small, you may be finish the roasting process on a higher rack AND position it to one side so another dish can rest beside. A small casserole will fit here. I guess the tips is - do a trial run with your racks and casseroles before hand so you will not need to move hot racks around!
