I’m in the middle of making some cookies and I messed up. I was supposed to let the butter soften, but I nuked it since I was in a hurry. I ended up using melted butter instead of softened butter. According to the recipe, I was to beat the butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Mine is not light and fluffy. Is there anyway to save this, or do I need to start over? FWIW, here is the recipe I was making: http://tinyurl.com/3xyjkj

yes it did ruin everything
i did try using melted butter for my
cheesecake once but it was ruined
had to do it all over again
i later found out that mealted and softened are different things.
Using melted butter, the cookies will flatten out almost immediately in the oven. This affects the texture (they’ll be much more crisp) and they’ll cook faster because they’re thinner.
Colleen,
Thanks for your question regarding the melted butter vs softened butter for your cookies. Unfortunately, the bad news is that you will have to start over in order to have success with this cookie recipe, or any other that only calls for softened butter. Cookie recipes depend on a semi-solid state of butter to suspend the sugar molecules until a certain point in the baking process. By using melted butter, rather than softened, you have unknowingly changed the composition of the cookie and this will fail to provide structure for the baking cookie. So, I can only recommend starting fresh, when you can get more butter. I’m sorry that we didn’t have a quick fix, but there isn’t any way to remedy that situation.
