I need info about making a bread dough basket. A recipe and instructions for baking for a festive Thanksgiving bread basket. I can make bread well, but I am unclear as to how to make this decortive edible basket.
Thanks for your bread basket question. You asked for a recipe for an edible basket - fact is, I’ve only seen bread baskets that were not edible.
Without ever having made one (but having baked hundreds of loaves of bread) I suspect the basic technique of weaving strips of dough over a bowl would work for any fairly hearty bread. And, if you skip the shelac than you’re set. In fact, I would use a recipe for breadsticks to make the dough. A lot of breadsticks use pizza dough or a soft Italian bread.
And, I did some internet research for confirmation. The only recipe for edible bread for a bread dough baset I came across is here: How to Make Bread Dough. This site does a good job of explaining the technique.
Chef Adam also recommends pizza dough or a soft Italian bread.
Hope we’ve helped. Please let us know how it goes. It will be beautiful. And, our pastry chefs are here on call at 1-800-977-1224 if you need some live help!

Beadsitcks are often made from pizza dough and sometimes from a soft Italian bread. Use my rich pizza dough recipe from A Year In Bread. Click HERE for this recipe.
